CLIMATE, SOILS
AND VARIETIES
The
region of BIERZO enjoys a favourable location in a main village
with exits to further small villages; a very special micro climate
of moderate humidity and smooth temperatures. There is scarce
freezing during the year (an average of 3 days/year). All
this favours the rapid riping of the local varieties and early
harvesting.
Our vineyards are studied one by one by our winemakers and the
technical team from the University of Leon. They are located in
the best areas of El Bierzo. Usually, the vineyards are made
up of old Mencia vines, left to grow freely and of over 40 years.
The Godello variety are vines of 15 years growing with the conduction
of wires. They are all situated at an average altitude of 600 metres
above sea level and on hillsides looking south. The soil
is mainly of slate and gravel, offering an average production of
4,000 kilos per hectare.
WINE GROWING SCHEME
Both in the vineyard and at the winery,
the most natural methods are applied with an aim of obtaining wines
with personality. In
order to find the maximum quality in our grapes, we follow a strict
growing scheme which combines the traditional know-how of our winemakers,
together with the most modern techniques such as soil analysis
and sanitary tests. Furthermore, and in order to gather the
best production and ageing conditions of our wines, we reduce the
bunches of each vine by early pruning before riping. Herbicides
are substituted by traditional ploughing and chemical products
are reduced, respecting the ecosystem of the vineyard as much as
possible.
VINE PLOTS/VINEYARDS
According to our knowledge from our
first vinification, in 2001 we chose 7 plots with very specific
characteristics, where the variety was exceptional. They are very old vineyards with
deep roots which force the vine to feed from the sub-soil. Each
of these plots were cultivated according to their specific soil
and climate requirements. This is how Bembibre was
born; like a fusion of the characteristics of six of these vineyards.
The seventh plot which was outstanding, received a specific treatment
and produced our Tares P 3 wine.
