HARVEST NOTES |

VINTAGE 2001
The characteristics of 2001 vintage present a slightly higher acidity compared to 2000 vintage. This fact provided more potential fruity aromas and a fuller and more harmonious phenolic maturing.
Rainfalls were abundant during winter, mainly in November and February which are inactive months for the vineyard.
There were high temperatures in August and September with adequate sunrise. These climatic factors gave way to excessive flowering of grapes, thus, it was necessary to eliminate excess weight which is harmful to the ripening of the grapes, especially in the Mencia vines.
As to the Godello variety, it is a vintage featuring very expressive aromas and a more balanced acidity with respect to 2000. Concerning red wines, a rare structure and body can be found with regard to previous years; the behaviour in barrels was totally correct.
To summarize, harmony, elegance and structure define the 2001 vintage wines.

VINTAGE 2002
Moderate winter temperatures and rainfall were registered in the area. Towards the end of winter, there was a progressive increase of temperatures which provoked an early flowering of the vine. Spring was moderately cool, slowing the evolution of the vintage, recording alternative rainfalls. The flowering of the Mencia vines during June brought about an important decrease of the vintage with respect to 2001.
During July and August there were adequate climatic conditions with milder temperatures compared to 2001 and with an unusually slower development and ripening of the grapes. Nevertheless, this favoured the formation of polyphenols in the grains.
These ideal conditions remained until the third week of September with good ripening and excellent health of the vines.
Harvesting of the Godello variety begins 10th September, continuing with the picking of the Mencia vines of the most western side of Villafranca del Bierzo, Valtuille and Perandones.
The harvest ends 22nd September at the high Bierzo vineyards, Almazcara, Congosto and Bembibre. As of this period, southwest fronts make en entry, accompanied by abundant rainfalls which provoke the appearance of botrytis in the vineyard. Obviously, this finalizes the harvest.
The final result was a 30% decrease of the harvest with respect to 2001; however, the quality of the collected grape was slightly higher due to a slower and more complete ripening.
The wines obtained are of enormous personality with frank and strong aromas from the different varieties. It is definitely a wine with exceptional storing potential.

VINTAGE 2003
The 2003 Vintage has seen a mild winter and spring with moderate rainfall. This brought about an early flowering of the vines in the western vineyards of El Bierzo, especially in the Mencia variety. During the summer months, there was an important temperature increase mainly in the last fortnight of August, as is the case in the rest of the country. However and due to the water reserves accumulated during the first third of the year, there is no unbalance in the photosynthesis of the plant. The growth cycle takes place earlier and without any incident with respect to the 2002 vintage. Due to this same fact, the harvest takes place between the 8th to 25th September, totally free of rainfall.
The result is the production of enormously structured, aromatic wines with a correct behaviour in barrels.

VINTAGE 2004
In 2004 both winter and spring were mild with normal rainfall for these seasons.
Spurting began during April and flowering at the end of June. No special remarks to be made.
Summer brought smooth temperatures and normal rainfall for this period.
The harvest began in a gradual way on 12th September and ended 5th October.
Wines from the 2004 vintage have had an excellent behaviour during ageing and they promise to offer floral nuances, specially notes of red fruits. This vintage is undoubtedly the most Atlantic in the last years due to its freshness.
